The purpose of the West Tennessee Healthcare Alzheimer’s Support Group is to provide reliable information and education, create a support network of caregivers who can share from personal experience and be a resource for the journey of giving care to those with Alzheimer’s disease.

Like many of us, you probably never thought this would happen to you. But now that your loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, you want to do everything you can to help.

In 2010, two West Tennessee Healthcare employees who experience Alzheimer’s with their own family members began to share their own journeys. Meeting monthly at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, the group hears from experts in relevant areas in order to equip people like you with information and tools needed to provide the best care for your loved one. Some of the practical aspects of the Alzheimer’s journey are discussed, such as:

  • What Alzheimer’s really is
  • Techniques for care giving
  • Understanding the experience of a loved one
  • Maintaining individual physical and mental health
  • Taking care of financial, legal and long-term care planning issues
  • Medical and prescription drug options
  • Avoiding burnout through personal and spiritual renewal

While being a caregiver can be a rewarding experience, it can also be a difficult one. The West Tennessee Healthcare Support Group allows folks like you to take a few minutes each month to take a deep breath, be encouraged and join others in developing the skills necessary to meet the needs of your loved one.

In addition, the support group organizes special annual conferences with nationally recognized speakers to extend its outreach to professional caregivers, friends and family members. These events provide additional opportunities for interactive sessions for learning how to provide the best care in various roles, experiencing times of sharing with other caregivers and obtaining educational materials on available resources in the community.

The support groups is affiliated with the Alzheimer’s Association, a national organization whose mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
